In this blog post, I will be detailing my proposal; some things I will add into this proposal include my target audience, purpose of my magazine, distribution methods and content. I am doing this as it will clearly lay out all of my purposes and details for my magazine.
Target audience
To begin with, I have filled out a customer profiling sheet as this is what the average person in my target audience would be like; however, this isn't to say that somebody who doesn't exactly fit into the responses I have detailed here wouldn't also be in the target audience for my magazine.
Along with my customer profiling sheet, I also made a reader profile of what I think my average reader would be like. I left some things unspecified like what she would study at University, as nothing in my magazine focuses around this and I want to make it so that it's inclusive for everybody.
There are a number of categories that demographics will measure, with the most common ones being:
- Age: 15-19
- Gender: Female
- Race: Not targeted at any specific race
- Occupation: Student, or part time job to support studies
- Education level: Student, either A levels or University studies
I have chosen to target this specific demographic of young women, as their spending power in the UK is quite valuable. A lot of young women also value fashion/cosmetics/lifestyle greatly, and therefore they will be interested in reading a magazine about this. I found a study showing that 10-18 year olds spend £709m on toiletries and cosmetics per year, which shows their spending power - UK's 10–18 year old market spend £709m on cosmetics per year (professionalbeauty.co.uk). I didn't choose to aim at a specific race as gen z women are more progressive and value equality more than previous generations have, so excluding races could cause offense.
I also chose to target students here, as 15+ is the age when you're usually allowed to use it in school, and when girls start to value it; therefore, having an easy simple to read magazine is helpful for them especially when there is so much to read about in terms of fashion or cosmetics. It could also be helpful for them to hear about exams, as most students of this age will be taking them and exam worries can affect any age.
I also think multiple psychometric categories would fall under my target audience, as I have targeted a broad range of people. I think the categories that my audience could follow are explorer, mainstreamer and reformer. Here is what the BBC Bitesize website defines them as:
I think explorer would fit into my target audience, as on the magazine there will be an article where we speak about unknown/underrated fashion or cosmetics products. My magazine target audience would also target people who don't know a lot about these things, and therefore they are exploring by getting to know more about these things.
I also think mainstreamer fits into my target audience, as even though I will add an article about more unknown products, most of it will focus on reviews of popular products and speaking about how well they work. This means that people already familiar with my products might like my magazine, as they want to know if similar products are also good. Or, people who want to buy these products and who are already familiar with makeup will also fall under mainstreamer as they already know about it.
Reformer fits into my magazine target audience as this is what a lot of gen z are already classed as so it makes sense to target them. Additionally, I will also be featuring an article showcasing brands of cruelty free makeup brands and fashion brands which are ethical in their treatment of workers. This will encourage people who are ethically conscious of what they buy to read the magazine, as there isn't many ethical brands out there and they would want to know replacements.
Purpose
The purpose of my magazine is to inform and promote. I will be informing my audience by informing them of new products, and also informing them of the benefits of using vegan products when looking at this. I will also be promoting these things by putting them in my article about vegan fashion/makeup, and also adding pictures of products scattered around my two-page spread. This links to my target audience as they will most likely easily have access to the internet, and therefore displaying the name of the products will make them be able to search it up online and buy it easier.
Content
To help make my magazine name, I looked into gen z aesthetics and what current teenagers associate themselves with in terms of this. This is the website that I used to look at the different fashion aesthetics: A Lo-fi Guide And List Of Gen Z Fashion Aesthetics | Dictionary.com
I also looked at what teen magazines have called themselves previously to see how they gained an audience.
As you can see, a lot of them have the word teen or teenager, or a feminine word such as glitter/girl. When researching, I also saw that a lot of the fashion aesthetic names have the phrase "____ girl".
Based on these fashion aesthetic names being common, along with it being a common name for the magazines, I have decided to name my magazine "everything girl".
This is also because of the fact that I want to promote inclusivity in my magazine, and some names above has been criticised for being racist and promoting unrealistic beauty standards so I want to avoid having a name that links to this.
Additionally, the magazines I was looking at are also popular teen magazines so I also looked at them for an insight into what to do for my content and layout.
As teen vogue is what showed up most commonly when googling teen magazines, this is what I have decided to look at when thinking about the content.
For the images selected, they look elegant and professional despite still being on a teen magazine, which is what I would like to incorporate. The font also looks the same and I think I will try and add a bold font which will work well against my pictures if I add the right contrasting colours.
In my magazine, I will include an interview that I will be writing up, as my pages will be focused on the products and reviewing them, therefore having the creator of a fictional vegan beauty brand would be good to inspire people by showing them the benefits.
The style that my cover image will be in is going to be similar to the above teen vogue covers, as it will fully show the makeup being worn. I will shoot this with a professional camera and take pictures of my friend, using her as a model.
In my double page spread, I will use a full size image of my friend where it also shows her outfit off, as this is a fashion magazine too.
I will also take various pictures of the products, and I will take this on a plain white background so I can edit the background out and place it directly onto the magazine.
I think I will use a font from the sans serif theme of DaFont for my masthead and I decided to use this font, as it looks professional yet appealing to teenagers at the same time, which is what I am generally aiming for in my magazine's layout. Coolvetica Font | dafont.com. I will also use a standard font for my regular text, such as in the article.
The genre of my magazine would be a consumer magazine, as this is what is most popular and also what fashion magazines fit under; there is also multiple subgenres of consumer magazines and mine would fit into the lifestyle subgenre, as it is mostly focused on the lifestyle and lives of gen z teenagers.
In terms of actual content, I will have the front cover be a photo shoot of my friend, with her wearing makeup and fashion as this is what I will be focusing on. On the top half of the left of my first page, I will also be adding another smaller picture of the photoshoot; then, underneath this, I will be featuring a small article on what the makeup and clothes featured will be. On the second page of my double sheet spread, I will feature a separate article on sustainability in the fashion industry, veganism and how fast fashion impacts people.
Resources and personnel
The software I will be using is photoshop while doing final adjustments to my fonts, colours, images and the overall layout of. I will also be using light room when I want to make changes to my pictures that I will be taking. To make my digital design, I will also be using indesign, as this is an adobe product which has the option to make a magazine cover.
In terms of people, there will be two people used; me and my friend. She will be the model only, and I will have the other job responsibilities. These responsibilities include dressing her up and designing her makeup, and also being the director and photographer of the shoot. I will also be the journalist writing the article on sustainability, and I will also be the graphic designer, who is in charge of choosing appropriate fonts/colours, and looking at how the cover can be designed for maximum efficiency.
For equipment, I will use the Canon r5 camera as it has facial recognition and this will be the sole focus of my photoshoots; I will also be using a standard tripod as there isn't a lot of variety in the types of these. I will shoot it at my house and use a plain wall colour so it looks professional against her.
Distribution and marketing methods
To create synergy, I am planning on doing a cross-media sale discount, which will be visible on a company's website advertising to find the code in the magazine; it will also be shown in the actual magazine.
As this is an eco-aware magazine, it will be distributed mainly through online methods and websites as this creates a lot less harmful effect on the environment. I will also distribute it physically as this will be essential for gaining traction for my magazine; it will be distributed nationally as it's supposed to appeal to every type of teenage girl, so leaving out a group of people could be seen as exclusionary.
